The origins of our club trace back to 1920 when a local team competed in the Central Albert Football Association under various names, including Barmera, Lakes, Lake Bonney, and Lake Barmera.
The Barmera Football Club officially formed in 1921 and competed in the Upper Murray Football Association (UMFA). At the time the league consisted of teams such as Berri, Renmark, Lyrup, and Glossop. Another team from the Barmera area going by the name South Lake Ramblers also began competing this year but in the local Central Albert Football Association.
Success came quickly for the newly formed Barmera team with former North Adelaide champion, Lloyd Davies, leading the team to an undefeated year and taking out their first ever premiership in the UMFA in the year 1922.
The Barmera team played at multiple venues before settling at Memorial Oval, including Bruce Oval and a lakefront ground west of the current oval.
